After an older bachelor finds a wounded woman in an alley and brings her home, the night turns into a long confession. Charlotte Gainsbourg is Joe, who introduces herself as a nymphomaniac and begins recounting her sexual history, while Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard) listens and responds with digressions on fly fishing, Fibonacci numbers, and organ music. As Joe’s story moves back to her adolescence and early adulthood, Stacy Martin takes over as the younger Joe, tracing a series of encounters that the film frames through conversation, memory, and Seligman’s detached attempts to interpret what he’s hearing.
