After her husband leaves her for a bestselling romance novelist, suburban housewife Ruth Patchett decides not to fade quietly into the background. Roseanne Barr is Ruth, channeling the shock of a collapsing marriage into an increasingly elaborate campaign against the life her family thought was settled. Across town, Meryl Streep’s Mary Fisher lives in a world of soft-focus wealth and paperback fantasy, while Bob (Ed Begley Jr.) drifts from one household to the other. The setup turns a divorce feud into a pointed late-’80s comedy about vanity, domestic resentment, and revenge.
