In feudal Japan, a quiet samurai household is thrown into crisis when a clan lord orders his son to marry a dismissed mistress, then demands her return once the marriage becomes a genuine family bond. Toshirô Mifune is Isaburo Sasahara, an aging swordsman whose long habit of obedience starts to break under the lord’s shifting commands. At the center is Yoko Tsukasa’s Ichi, first treated as a political arrangement and then as wife and mother. What begins as a marriage decree becomes a direct challenge to the authority of the clan itself.
