20th Century Women

ComedyDrama119 min

In 1979 Santa Barbara, Dorothea Fields is a single mother in her mid-50s trying to raise her teenage son, Jamie, at a moment of punk, feminism, and generational change. Annette Bening is Dorothea, who turns to two younger women for help: Greta Gerwig's Abbie, a boarder and punk artist, and Julie, the provocative teenage neighbor who becomes part of Jamie's upbringing. As Jamie grows up among shifting ideas about sex, adulthood, and independence, the film keeps its focus on the people sharing Dorothea's house and the different ways they try to shape one another.
