In 1985 Manhattan, as the AIDS crisis and Reagan-era politics bear down on the city, Prior Walter learns he is ill and finds his relationship with Louis beginning to fracture. Justin Kirk is Prior, whose suffering takes a surreal turn when an angel appears, while Al Pacino’s Roy Cohn pressures a young Mormon lawyer toward a Justice Department job even as he guards his own secrets. Their lives intersect with Harper Pitt, trapped in a medicated, sexless marriage, as illness, guilt, religion and power push a small circle of New Yorkers toward visions they can’t explain.
