Henry Maske is Max Schmeling, the German boxer who rises to national fame in the 1930s after becoming world heavyweight champion. His status shifts when he loses to Joe Louis, and the Nazi regime turns on a figure it had once embraced, sending him to the front with the expectation that he won’t come back. Heino Ferch and Susanne Wuest are part of the supporting cast as the film follows Schmeling from the ring into the machinery of wartime Germany, tying his public image and career to the politics closing in around him.
