A middle-class Tokyo family keeps living by routine after the father suddenly loses his job and hides it from everyone at home. Each member begins leading a secret life of their own: his wife feels the strain of a household built on silence, one son rejects the expected path, and the younger son becomes fixated on piano lessons his father forbids. As money tightens and pride hardens into denial, small deceptions pile up and the family’s ordinary days start to come apart. In Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s drama, the collapse does not arrive all at once; it unfolds through missed connections, private humiliations, and the widening gap between the roles this family performs and the lives they are actually living.
