In war-torn medieval Japan, a mother and her daughter-in-law survive in the reeds by luring stray samurai into a swamp, killing them, and trading their armor for grain. Nobuko Otowa is the older woman, living in a harsh alliance with Jitsuko Yoshimura’s younger, more restless companion. When a neighbor returns from the fighting, desire and resentment start to upset the arrangement. Kei Satô’s Hachi becomes the spark for that shift, while a mysterious mask taken from a dead samurai pushes their cramped world toward something darker and more uncanny.
