In 1920s New York, a struggling playwright finally gets the money to stage his new play, but the deal comes with a price: he must cast the notoriously untalented girlfriend of a mobster. As rehearsals begin, the production turns into a tug-of-war between artistic ambition, backstage vanity, and criminal interference. Every attempt to protect the play only gives the mob a deeper foothold in it, and the line between creative notes and threats starts to disappear. John Cusack anchors the chaos as the writer watches his hard-won opportunity slip out of his control, while Dianne Wiest adds another source of disruption inside an already unstable cast.
