Martin LaSalle is Michel, a young Parisian who turns to pickpocketing on a whim, only to find the lure of theft hard to shake after an early arrest. In black-and-white Paris, he studies the craft in crowded streets, subways, and train stations, drifting deeper into petty crime even as an inspector keeps close watch and the people around him urge him toward steadier work. Marika Green is among the few figures in Michel’s life as his stealing becomes less a stunt than a private discipline, bound up with isolation, repetition, and the constant risk of being caught.
