In 1947 Nuremberg, an American military tribunal puts four German judges on trial for crimes against humanity committed under the Nazi regime. Spencer Tracy is Chief Justice Haywood, sent to hear testimony from lead defendant Ernst Janning (Burt Lancaster), defense attorney Hans Rolfe, and a string of witnesses whose accounts turn legal arguments into a reckoning with collaboration, coercion, and responsibility. As the proceedings unfold in occupied Germany, the case widens beyond the men on trial to the institutions and citizens who enabled them.
