The Turin Horse

Drama155 min

After the horse-whipping incident in 1889 Turin that is said to have preceded Friedrich Nietzsche’s collapse, the story turns to a cab driver and his daughter living in a barren countryside with the animal. János Derzsi and Erika Bók are the father and daughter at the center, moving through the same chores—drawing water, dressing, eating boiled potatoes—as relentless wind batters their house and the horse begins to fail. Shot in stark black and white, with sparse dialogue and unbroken takes, the film stays close to their routine as daily life strips down to labor, silence, and a gathering sense of depletion.
