San Francisco cop Jack Cates has spent four years hunting an elusive drug kingpin known only as the Ice Man. When a photo reveals a contract on Reggie Hammond just as he's due to leave prison, Jack has to pull his old partner back into the case while trying to clear himself from a manslaughter charge. Nick Nolte's Jack barrels through the investigation with his usual blunt force, while Eddie Murphy is Reggie, the ex-con now caught between the police and the men sent to kill him. The trail runs through Bay Area bikers, drug dealers, and shootouts as the two are thrown together again.
