Saadat Hasan Manto moves through Bombay’s seedy-shiny film world as one of the most widely read Urdu writers of the late 1940s, until sectarian violence upends the country and forces him to leave the city he loves. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is Manto, writing, drinking, and arguing his way through a life split between literary fame and increasing isolation. In Lahore, work dries up and old connections fall away. Rasika Dugal is Safia, the wife holding the household together, while Tahir Raj Bhasin’s Shyam reflects Manto’s deep ties to the Bombay he can no longer return to.
