The Magdalene Sisters
Drama119 min
In Dublin in 1964, three teenage girls are sent to a Magdalene asylum after being branded “fallen” by their families and the Church, then put to work in a punishing laundry run by nuns. Anne-Marie Duff and Nora-Jane Noone are among the young women at the film’s center, trying to hold onto their dignity under a regime of surveillance, humiliation, and abuse. Drawn from true accounts of Ireland’s Magdalene laundries, Peter Mullan’s film follows life inside an institution built to police shame, obedience, and silence.
