An apartment and a visa bring two strangers into the same sham marriage in Peter Weir’s romantic comedy. Andie MacDowell is Brontë Mitchell, an urban horticulturalist who can only get the apartment she wants if she has a husband; Gérard Depardieu’s Georges Fauré is a French waiter whose visa is about to expire. Their arrangement is supposed to solve two separate problems at once, until immigration officials grow suspicious and the newlyweds have to live together to make the story believable. What starts as a practical deal becomes a day-to-day collision of habits, language, and sharply different temperaments.
