Kurt Russell is Michael, whose gratitude curdles as Officer Pete Davis ingratiates himself with the couple, arranging extra security and showing up far beyond the needs of the case. Ray Liotta's Pete keeps finding reasons to stay close to Karen, and Madeleine Stowe's quiet, shaken presence gives the marriage at the center of the film a tightening sense of alarm as concern turns into fixation, surveillance, and threats inside the Carrs' home.
