Chris Cringle is having a bad season: Santa’s workshop is losing money, a deal with the U.S. military is keeping the operation afloat, and one angry child has taken his Christmas disappointment personally. Mel Gibson is an aging, hard-bitten Santa whose latest problem begins after a precocious 12-year-old gets a lump of coal and hires a killer. Walton Goggins shows up as that neatly dressed assassin, turning a warped holiday grudge into a pursuit that reaches all the way to Santa’s doorstep. The film twists North Pole mythology into a crime story with deadpan violence and a worn-down, wintry edge.
