The Commitments

ComedyDrama118 min

Jimmy Rabbitte, a music-mad kid from north Dublin, decides his neighborhood needs a soul band and starts assembling one from wedding singers, local musicians, and whoever answers his ad. Robert Arkins is Jimmy, hustling the group into existence while Andrew Strong’s Deco brings the voice and swagger of a frontman. An aging trumpet player, Joey “The Lips” Fagan (Johnny Murphy), rounds out the lineup as rehearsals, gigs, and clashing personalities turn the idea into The Commitments. Alan Parker’s film stays close to Barrytown life even as the band chases the sound and style of classic soul.
