When a Mexican farming village is bled dry by recurring bandit raids, the villagers scrape together enough to hire seven gunfighters to stand with them. Yul Brynner leads the group with clipped authority, and Steve McQueen gives one of the hired hands a laid-back, watchful presence; on the other side, Eli Wallach's bandit chief keeps the threat close and constant. Built around the uneasy alliance between desperate farmers and men who live by the gun, the film moves between village routines, hard bargaining, and the long wait for the next attack.
