After killing his supervisor in a Chicago steel mill, Bill flees to the Texas Panhandle with his girlfriend Abby and his little sister, where the three pose as siblings and join the wheat harvest. Richard Gere is Bill, a young laborer trying to stay ahead of trouble; when a wealthy, ailing farmer takes an interest in Abby, Brooke Adams's drifter becomes the center of a tense bargain, with Sam Shepard as the taciturn landowner. In the migrant camps and wide wheat fields of 1916 Texas, money, class, and jealousy begin to press on the couple’s fragile arrangement.
