In Los Angeles, Issa Rae is Issa Dee, a young Black woman stumbling through work, dating, and the question of what adulthood is supposed to look like. Her closest sounding board is Molly (Yvonne Orji), an accomplished friend whose own romantic life and career pressures are just as messy. As Issa tries to sort out relationships, ambition, and self-image, the show stays close to the small humiliations, bad decisions, and hard conversations that shape everyday life. It keeps its focus on friendship as much as romance, following two women trying to make sense of who they are and how they want to live.
