After her teenage son dies, Madrid nurse Manuela heads to Barcelona to find the long-estranged father he never knew. Cecilia Roth is Manuela, moving through grief as she reconnects with an old friend who works the streets and is drawn into the orbit of a troubled stage actress and a pregnant nun. Marisa Paredes appears as that actress, with Penélope Cruz among the women who become part of Manuela’s new circle. Directed by Pedro Almodóvar, the film moves between hospitals, theater dressing rooms, and Barcelona nightlife, building a story around loss, performance, and an improvised family.
