Amid civil war in 16th-century Japan, potter Genjuro and his neighbor Tobei ignore warnings against profiting from chaos, taking their wares to market while chasing wealth and samurai glory. Masayuki Mori is Genjuro, whose ambitions draw him toward the mysterious Lady Wakasa, with Machiko Kyô giving the noblewoman an eerie, otherworldly calm. Behind them are the wives left to bear the cost of those fantasies: Kinuyo Tanaka’s Miyagi and Mitsuko Mito’s Ohama. Moving through muddy villages, battle-scarred roads, and a world where the supernatural slips into everyday life, the story binds greed, war, desire, and illusion to a mounting sense of loss.
