John Goodman's Lawrence Woolsey, an inventive horror showman, rolls into Key West in October 1962 to premiere Mant!, a bug-eyed monster movie timed to the panic of the Cuban Missile Crisis. As air-raid fears and bomb-shelter talk spread through town, Woolsey turns the screening into a carnival of film effects, stage props, and rubber-suit creatures. Around him, a cluster of local teenagers, including Simon Fenton and Lisa Jakub, get caught up in the buildup to opening night while the Cold War hangs just offshore. The movie threads small-town adolescence, atomic-age dread, and affectionate B-movie chaos through the same weekend.
