The Band Wagon

ComedyMusicalRomance112 min

A fading Hollywood musical star heads to 1950s Broadway hoping a new show will revive his career, only to watch the production veer into self-important spectacle. Fred Astaire is the veteran performer at the center of the scramble, trying to keep the comeback on track as rehearsals unravel and egos collide. Opposite him, Cyd Charisse brings cool elegance to the ballerina cast as his co-star, whose arrival sharpens both the tension onstage and the attraction off it. Vincente Minnelli frames the backstage chaos with rehearsal rooms, opening-night nerves, and big production numbers that keep colliding with the show's grand artistic ambitions.
