The Heiress
DramaRomance115 min
In 1840s New York, Catherine Sloper is the shy daughter of a wealthy physician whose quiet life shifts when a charming young suitor begins calling. Olivia de Havilland is Catherine, awkward and hopeful in a house ruled by her exacting father, Dr. Sloper (Ralph Richardson). As the romance deepens, Catherine is caught between her own feelings and her father’s suspicion that the young man is interested less in her than in the inheritance waiting behind the family name. The courtship unfolds through formal visits, family dinners, and a tightening contest over money, manners, and motive.
