To Have and Have Not

In wartime Martinique, charter boat skipper Harry Morgan wants to stay out of politics until a job pulls him toward the French resistance. Humphrey Bogart is Morgan, a tough expatriate making his living on the water, while Lauren Bacall’s Marie arrives as a sharp, self-possessed drifter who catches his attention at the worst possible moment. Around them, the island’s bars, hotel rooms, and docks fill with collaborators, fugitives, and people trying to keep their footing as the war closes in. Directed by Howard Hawks, the film threads together romance, danger, and dry, fast-moving dialogue without losing sight of its occupied-island stakes.
