On a late-night New York City subway ride, two street hoods turn a train car into a trap, harassing and intimidating the passengers stop after stop. Tony Musante and a young Martin Sheen are the pair at the center of it, while riders including Ruby Dee and Brock Peters register the strain spreading through the car. In stark black and white and largely confined to the train, the story holds on a cross-section of city life under pressure, with fear, prejudice, and hesitation surfacing among people who can’t simply get off and leave.
