Kwaidan gathers four Japanese ghost stories set in feudal Japan: a penniless samurai leaves his first wife to marry for money, a woodcutter rescued in a blizzard is warned never to speak of the Snow Woman, blind musician Hoichi (Katsuo Nakamura) is called to perform for an audience that should not exist, and an author becomes fixated on a samurai’s face reflected in his teacup. Directed by Masaki Kobayashi, the film moves from snowy wilderness to candlelit chambers and battle-haunted halls, with Tetsurô Tanba among the figures drawn into its supernatural reckonings.
