Shakespeare’s Macbeth moves to contemporary Mumbai, where Maqbool is drawn into the orbit of Abbaji, the head of a crime family, as two corrupt policemen begin speaking in prophecy instead of plain police work. Irrfan Khan is Maqbool, with Pankaj Kapur’s Abbaji looming over the city’s gang politics and Tabu close to the center of the family power struggle. The story keeps the shape of the Scottish tragedy but trades castles for back rooms, police corruption and the criminal underworld of India’s commercial capital.
