After her abusive stepfather has her committed, Babydoll (Emily Browning) retreats into an elaborate fantasy world where escape takes the form of a quest for five key items. Inside the institution, she tries to pull together a small group of allies: Sweet Pea, whose wary resistance comes through in Abbie Cornish's performance, along with Rocket, Blondie, and Amber. Oscar Isaac's Blue holds power over the girls, while Carla Gugino's Madam Gorski occupies a more ambiguous place in Babydoll's reality. The story shifts between the asylum, a brothel-style performance space, and stylized battles involving samurai, dragons, and towering mechanical soldiers.
