After her life has unraveled, Cheryl Strayed heads into the wilderness with no hiking experience, determined to walk more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in 1995. Reese Witherspoon is Cheryl, carrying an overstuffed pack and a backlog of grief, addiction, and broken relationships as memories surface along the route. Laura Dern’s Bobbi, Cheryl’s mother, appears in the recollections that shape the trip. The film keeps close to the physical grind of the hike and the personal history Cheryl is trying to outwalk.
