With Earth on the brink of nuclear self-destruction, a joint American-Soviet crew heads for Jupiter to rendezvous with the still-orbiting Discovery and learn what happened on its last mission. Roy Scheider is among the scientists aboard the Leonov, with Helen Mirren on the Soviet side and John Lithgow among the American contingent. Waiting near Discovery are its sole known survivor (Keir Dullea) and HAL 9000, the computer linked to the earlier catastrophe. As a follow-up to 2001: A Space Odyssey, the film ties Cold War pressure to a mission built around unanswered questions in deep space.
