When brilliant student Light Yagami discovers a notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it, he turns that power into a private crusade against criminals. Tatsuya Fujiwara is Light, whose idea of justice soon draws the attention of the police and an elusive detective known only as L. Opposite him, Ken'ichi Matsuyama's L works from the shadows, turning the hunt for a mass killer into a duel of logic, surveillance, and ego. In Japan, the case widens as Light tries to build a new order while staying ahead of the investigators closing in on him.
