In 1897, young Priscilla Williams arrives in northern India with her widowed mother and is sent to live at a British army outpost commanded by the grandfather she barely knows. Shirley Temple is Priscilla, nicknamed “Wee Willie Winkie,” a child whose cheer and curiosity slowly thaw the reserve of C. Aubrey Smith’s Colonel Williams. Around the fort, she becomes a favorite of the regiment, but her innocent wandering also places her near the tensions surrounding the post and the local leader portrayed by Cesar Romero. John Ford directs this colonial-era adventure around military ritual, family distance, and a child moving freely through a world of rank and conflict.
