My Night at Maud's
ComedyDramaRomance111 min
Around Christmas in Clermont-Ferrand, Jean-Louis Trintignant is Jean-Louis, a Catholic engineer who spots Françoise (Marie-Christine Barrault) at Mass and decides, before speaking to her, that he will marry her. A chance meeting with an old friend, the Marxist Vidal, leads him to an evening at Maud’s apartment, where Françoise Fabian’s recently divorced Maud draws him into talk that moves from religion and atheism to desire, fidelity, and Blaise Pascal. When Jean-Louis ends up spending the night there, his carefully ordered ideas about love and obligation are suddenly no longer abstract.
