Searching for Bobby Fischer
Drama110 min
Seven-year-old Joshua Waitzkin discovers an uncommon gift for chess in New York City, but the adults around him disagree on what a champion should look like. Max Pomeranc is Joshua, a boy torn between park games and formal competition, while Bruce Pandolfini (Ben Kingsley) pushes discipline and Bobby Fischer’s model of ruthless focus. Laurence Fishburne’s Vinnie, a speed-chess hustler who first spots Joshua’s talent, offers a different education from the city streets. As tournaments raise the stakes, Joshua’s parents are left balancing ambition, protection, and the fear of what competition might ask of him.
