A World War I veteran leads a small rifle squad through World War II, carrying the same blunt code from the deserts of North Africa to Sicily, Omaha Beach, and the push across Europe. Lee Marvin is the sergeant, a career soldier trying to keep four younger men alive as long as he can. Among them are Mark Hamill's Pvt. Griff, the lone survivor of the squad's first action, and Robert Carradine's Pvt. Zab, a writer watching war turn replacements into veterans. The film follows the unit from one campaign to the next, staying close to the routines, casualties, and split-second decisions of infantry life.
