In 1985, Brian Jackson arrives at the University of Bristol as a scholarship kid from seaside Essex, carrying a head full of facts and years spent watching University Challenge. James McAvoy is Brian, awkward and ambitious as he tries to win a place on the quiz team while figuring out the rules of campus life under Thatcher-era Britain. His first year gets tangled up with class differences, student politics, and his attraction to Alice, while Rebecca Hall and Alice Eve round out the mix of friends, rivals, and romantic confusion waiting on campus.
