John Brown is a bumbling but earnest security guard until an explosion engineered by Dr. Claw leaves him near death and sends him to a robotics lab. Matthew Broderick is Brown, rebuilt with gadget-loaded limbs by scientist Brenda Bradford (Joely Fisher) and rechristened Inspector Gadget by the press. With his niece Penny and her dog Brain at his side, he has to adjust to springs, sirens, and hidden tools while tracing the attack back to Rupert Everett’s Dr. Claw. The movie turns Gadget’s origin story into a bright, slapstick chase through Los Angeles, with crime-fighting constantly interrupted by mechanical mishaps.
