On the day he plans to retire, CIA operative Nathan Muir learns that his former protégé has been captured in China and marked for execution by morning, while officials in Washington weigh whether saving him is worth the fallout. Robert Redford is Muir, a veteran case officer working the bureaucracy as hard as the field, and Brad Pitt’s Tom Bishop comes into focus through flashbacks to their earlier missions, from Vietnam into the closing years of the Cold War. As Muir pieces together what went wrong, the film moves between tense CIA briefings and the history of a partnership built on training, secrets, and competing loyalties.
