After his mother dies, 17-year-old Joshua “J” Cody moves in with relatives he barely knows at their beachside Southern California compound. The family, led by his controlling grandmother Smurf, makes its money through armed robberies and other jobs, and J is pulled into a world where loyalty, suspicion, and violence shape daily life. As he learns how each uncle operates, he also has to figure out whom to trust and how much of himself to give up to survive. Ellen Barkin and Shawn Hatosy are folded into a story about a teenager coming of age inside a family business built on crime.
