After losing his family in the September 11 attacks, Charlie Fineman drifts through New York cut off from the life he had before. Adam Sandler is Charlie, and when he unexpectedly reconnects with old college roommate Alan Johnson, Don Cheadle's overextended professional with a family of his own, the friendship becomes a fragile lifeline for both men. As Alan tries to reach someone who seems to have stepped outside ordinary routines altogether, the film stays focused on grief, marriage, memory, and the lingering aftermath of loss in the city around them.
