In 1979 Ohio, a group of friends filming a homemade zombie movie on Super 8 cameras witness a devastating train derailment, and their quiet town soon fills with unexplained disappearances and strange events. Joel Courtney is one of the movie-making kids at the center of the story, and a classmate (Elle Fanning) steps in for a scene just before the wreck.
