In the last years of Victoria’s reign, London is upended by the arrival of the Touched — mostly women who suddenly develop unusual abilities, ranging from startlingly useful to deeply unsettling. Laura Donnelly is Amalia True, a quick-fisted, enigmatic widow who joins forces with Ann Skelly’s Penance Adair, a bright young inventor, to protect and house other Touched women. Their refuge becomes a target as aristocrats, officials, and violent opportunists close in, turning the fight for safety into a larger battle over who gets a place in the city’s future.
