After nearly 50 years of marriage, Fiona’s growing forgetfulness can no longer be brushed aside, and she enters a nursing home equipped to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Julie Christie’s Fiona meets the transition with unsettling calm, while Grant (Gordon Pinsent) is left to reckon with the rules of separation, the history of their marriage, and the shock of watching her memory shift away from him. As Fiona settles into the home and forms a bond with another resident, the story stays close to the small humiliations, acts of care, and unresolved hurts that surface when a shared life starts to come apart.
