At Rudge Park Comprehensive, new arrival Will McKenzie lands in the middle of a friendship group that is desperate to look experienced and almost never is. He falls in with Simon, Neil and Jay, and ordinary school life turns into a run of bad ideas, failed schemes and public humiliation. The boys chase sex, status and some version of cool while dealing with indifferent teachers, family embarrassments and their own terrible judgment. Every attempt to impress someone or escape ridicule usually makes things worse, as Will’s need to narrate and control events collides with the chaos around him. The result is a portrait of suburban adolescence built from small disasters.
