In a near-future Los Angeles, Joaquin Phoenix is Theodore Twombly, a lonely letter writer whose life shifts when he installs an advanced operating system built to anticipate its user’s every need. The voice on the other end is Scarlett Johansson’s Samantha—curious, funny, and increasingly central to his days—and what begins as a digital assistant turns into an intimate relationship. As Theodore tries to make sense of that connection, the people around him, including Amy Adams and Rooney Mara, keep pulling him back toward the messier parts of human attachment. Spike Jonze frames it in soft colors, dense city spaces, and technology that feels both seamless and strangely personal.
