In 17th-century Italy, Benedetta Carlini is sent to a convent as a child and rises within its walls, where her bond with a young novice turns into a forbidden affair. Virginie Efira is Benedetta, whose ecstatic religious visions draw devotion, suspicion, and scrutiny from church authorities. Charlotte Rampling’s abbess watches the upheaval inside the convent as Paul Verhoeven folds desire, faith, and institutional power into a story based on historical accounts.
